CROOKERS

Posted by on Jul 30, 2011 in DJ's | 0 comments

CROOKERS

The Crookers are an Italian DJ/production duo (Bot and Phra) who have worked together since 2003. When the two artists met, both were trying to branch out of their genre and explore dance music. Their first collaboration worked. Phra said “It felt natural to team up, seeing that we had the same musical tastes… which isn’t that easy here in Milan”.

Bot took up the guitar at an early age, later moving onto synths, turntables and sequencers. Phra had already started DJing by age 11, when he was introduced to the Italian hip hop scene.

Their first international release was on Berlin´s Man Recordings (Funk Mundial #3), for which Crookers contributed various remixes. Later they released two EPs in 2008 (“Knobbers” and “Mad Kidz”, both exclusively containing original tracks), they are currently working on their first album, which is due for late 2009.[citation needed]

Their remix of Kid Cudi’s Day’N’Nite entered the UK singles chart at number 2 and is featured on the game Midnight Club: Los Angeles.

Crookers work with producer/remixers Sketch Iz Dead on many of their tracks.

AJAX

AJAX

His nickname used to be Thommo, but during the early nineties it didn’t sound very acid house. He didn’t like it, he never liked it this boy from OZ. The name tormented him. It undermined his dance party status and his emerging sexuality he thought. At art school the media students teased him and the sculpture students used to steal his mo wax lunchbox and mix clay into his peanut butter sandwiches. He ate them anyway. Art was going to kill him…
he needed to fight back… he needed to become an art killer. After burning his whiteboard markers, his teaching jacket and other assorted art college paraphernalia, his soul surrended. Giggling, the now defunct COFA Lecturer flipped some switches, twiddled knobs and took any excess clay he found to his new spinning wheels. The
abject lump of clay soon became a fragmented mess of dried up mud, dust and spilt candy glazes. It wasn’t an idealized form, there was shit everywhere but he loved it. Thommo had become a disco Jockey…Thommo had become Ajax.
Ajax made friends fast, although the dance floor still wasn’t sure of his technique. So he and his few new friends created their own studio…The BANG GANG (Modular). Soon the shit noise that they had created spawned a new poetry and it was recorded (Ministry of Sound Mashed 1 2002, Ministry of Sound Mashed
2 Bang Gang Djs 2005, Tiga/Ajax In the Mix 2005 (both cds nominated for DMA Best mixed cd 2006), Ajax Presents Spin City 2006, Light Sound Dance Bang Gang Djs 2007 (Modular), Sweat It Out 2008 (Sweat It Out), Dance Till
Dawn, Damnation, I’m With Bang Gang, Bang Gang KLassics and Bang Gang Art Killers 1).Technics In The Mix No.1 NSW DJ 2008, Australian Dj 2007 and 2006, Allen & Heath DMA Best Australian DJ and Best Mixed CD 2006, 3d World Dj of the Year 2002, 2004, 2005, his Art Killing had hit new heights. Busy Ps Best Dj of 2007(XLR8R), Digitalism’s best dj of 2007 (BIGSHOT) and Justice’s One to Watch in 2008 (DJ MAGAZINE). Fabric (London) pay him occasionally as do Showcase (Paris) for some spot cleaning, he no longer borrows money from his mum. His ego
is spiralled out of control and bent his pop making; remixing Princess Superstar, Midnight Juggernauts, The Emergency,
Naive New Beaters, and the Valentinos.
People laughed, some cried… His naked ambition had made him a peep show. Soon the dollar coins started to pile, he climbed them and to his surprise all he could see was clay and dust and glazes inevery direction. He was speaking in tongues, a green foam frothed soon from his nostrils and he perspired….. what better he thought
than to manipulate his ooze and bring forth establish his own record label, SWEAT IT OUT which launched officially in Feburary 2008 with the signings of Gameboy Gamegirl, Edu K, Act Yo Age, Oh Snap and Redial.
With subscriptions to Modern Painters and Frieze now long expired, the battle for dominance between Ajax and Art continues. With the field wider and the arsenal larger, we expect an explosive and
intriguing era ahead.

BAG RAIDERS

The Bag Raiders debut EP (featuring “Fun Punch”) is out now through Bang Gang 12inches and available on vinyl and the internet in all the usual places. Fun Punch is currently on high rotation on both JJJ and FBi and is included on the Ministry of Sound Annual 2008. A Bag Raiders Remixed 12 is due out at the end of January with remixes from Knightlife, Whitenoise, ZZZ and a Bag Raiders remix of “Fun Punch”. Bag Raiders are also putting the finishing touches on a release for the Fool’s Gold label in the States. One track will feature a special guest vocalist. They’ll soon begin working on a second 12 for Bang Gang that will come out some time in 2008.

Bag Raiders have remixed Midnight Juggernauts, Sneaky Sound System, The Valentinos – included on the Kitsune Maison 3 compilation and released as a 12 on the same label, KIM (from the Presets) and Muscles – both out now on Bang Gang 12 inches. They’ve also finished a Harris Robotis remix for Tommy Sunshine’s label, a Thieves Like Us mix (vs. the Bang Gang Deejays) and, most recently, Supermal, Headman and Kid Sister remixes. They also did the production on Sydney rapper the Tongue’s “Bad Education” and have some other hip hop projects in the pipeline.

Bag Raiders deejay everywhere in Sydney and often travel interstate. In February they’ll tour Australia with Good Vibrations. They’ve supported internationals such as MSTRKRFT, DJ Mehdi, Guns ‘n’ Bombs, Tiefschwarz and Boys Noize. And play regularly alongside the likes of Ajax, Muscles, Van She Tech, KIM, Cut Copy and the Bang Gang. Bag Raiders have done live sets on radio stations JJJ and FBi and they recently mixed the second disc of FBii’s “It’s The Beat” compilation. Although they’ve temporarily pulled the plug on their full-blown live show, the Bag Raiders sometimes do a kind of decks ‘n’ fx show with samplers and keyboards.
